Our Scientists Shone!

Thank you to all of the students and families who participated in Newcastle Elementary’s first ever science fair on Friday May 11!  Our student scientists obviously worked very hard on their projects and enjoyed sharing them.  Everyone had an opportunity to view more than 120 diverse projects from across the grade levels. Pacific Science Center’s Radical Reactions demonstration was a huge hit, as were the hands-on microscope and wind car exhibits presented by KidsQuest. Spring Book Fair FUNdraiser! Mark your calendars for Sunday, May 20th!

This year our “Spring into Summer Reading” book fair will not take place at school, but at the Barnes & Noble store in Bellevue.  Barnes & Noble is giving us a generous portion of purchases made online and in the store from May 20th - 25th. Wahoo! More than 200 students have registered for the Science Fair on May 11 from 6-8 pm! Students have submitted a wide diversity of project ideas, from astronomy to weather and everything in between. Nourish Every Mind Benefit Luncheon

Join us for the Issaquah Schools Foundation’s Nourish Every Mind Benefit Luncheon on Thurs., May 10 at the Issaquah Community Center. Why an Auction?

Every 2 years, our PTSA holds an auction to raise money for our children's education. The auction is the primary source of PTSA income. So, how is the money used? Literacy Have you seen it from the parking lot? The brand-new Book Room portable will be stocked with over 3,500 new books.  While all schools in the district will eventually implement this, Newcastle Elementary is the first to do so.  In addition, each classroom was recently equipped with U-shaped tables, which the teachers are now using to facilitate reading comprehension across a range of students. Spring Food Drive

This drive it to benefit students at Tiger Mountain Community High School, March 5th – 28th What is it? The Newcastle Elementary PTSA is sponsoring a Spring Food Drive to benefit the students at Tiger Mountain Community High School.  Tiger Mountain Community High School is the only alternative high school in our school district.  Many of the students there receive their only meals of the day at school and struggle without the basic necessities of life at home.  The donations we collect will be given to the administrators at the high school to be distributed to the students as needed. ... read full article

Recycling Fundraiser (formerly EcoPhones)

Did someone in your family receive a new electronic gadget for the holidays? What will you do with your old electronics? It’s estimated that less than 10% of all electronics are recycled in the United States. More than 1 Million cell phones are no longer being used. If we recycled all of them we would save enough energy to power 18,500 US households for a YEAR! First prize goes to Ms. McKenzie’s first grade class with 2,059 Box Tops and second prize goes to Ms. Keller’s fourth grade class with 1,421 Box Tops. Al Hirsch a.k.a Alleyoop is coming to Newcastle on Friday, March 9th for Family Game Night!

Discover Your Inner Scientist!

Eureka! Mark your calendars for Newcastle Elementary School's first ever science fair to be held on Friday, May 11 from 6-8 pm in the Commons. This Newcastle Elementary PTSA sponsored event will begin with a Radical Reactions demonstration by the Pacific Science Center. Golden Acorn Nominations

Each year our PTSA awards the Golden Acorn to individuals who have given outstanding volunteer service to the children and youth in our school community.  The Golden Acorn is special and given for continued and dedicated service.  This is an excellent way to honor our volunteers that have gone “above and beyond”!  Award winners receive the Golden Acorn Award Pin and a special certificate from the Washington State PTA.  The Council also contributes in the winner’s name to the Washington State PTA Scholarship Foundation, which provides scholarships to selected high school students entering post-secondary education.  Please take a few minutes ... read full article

Thank you to all fourteen of the fourth and fifth grade finalists who participated in the first ever Newcastle Elementary Geography Bee on Friday, January 13th!  We are proud of all of you! The Issaquah School District Bond On the Ballot April 17, 2012

Last month we gave you some stats and percentages about the upcoming Issaquah School District construction bond.  This month we are giving you some more important numbers: About 40%—Given the history of elections in the Issaquah School District, this is the percent of registered voters that are likely to vote in this special election on April 17, 2012.  Broken down, that number includes only 5,374 parents. 60%+1—the percentage of YES votes needed to pass this bond.  Per state law, this is a supermajority. VOICE Mentor Program (Volunteers of Issaquah Changing Education) VOICE is Thankful for all our mentors and wishful for more!! The VOICE Mentor Program is looking for community volunteers to work one on one with Issaquah students. These students are referred by teachers and counselors as needing extra support whether it is academic, social or emotional. The Volunteer commitment is one hour per week through the school year. Art Docent Materials Needed

The Art Docent program is looking for a few items that might be gathering dust in your closet or attic. If you have any of these materials and would like to donate them, please drop them in the labeled "Art Docent" Bin located outside the Office. It is a notoriously difficult time for high school students to find a job. The Youth Job Skills Fair is designed to help. In our 4 year auction history, we have raised nearly $500,000 for the school. Our biennial auction is the primary source of PTSA funds, which support current school programs and other initiatives. Innisbrook Fundraiser Results!

A tremendous thank you is sent to the 247 students and families that supported the 2011 Innisbrook Fundraiser.  Our students sold over $25,400 in Innisbrook products, exceeding our sales goal by $5,400!  Newcastle Elementary PTSA will receive over $11,000 to support the programs and events provided to the students throughout the year. Save the Environment and Earn Money for Our School

We’re continuing our partnership with Terracycle and recycling Capri Sun and Honest Kids drink pouches, Ziploc (or other brand) baggies, and  glue sticks and bottles.  Terracycle recycles consumer waste and creates new products.  We started recycling Ziploc products in February 2011 and collected almost 9,500 baggies.  Last school year we collected 4,005 drink pouches. We receive $0.02 for each usable item – that means we earned $269.24 while keeping everything we shipped Terracycle from the landfill.
